For generations, this building has stood at the center of commercial life in Rochester, Vermont. Long before it became the Kendall Building—and before the Rochester Café occupied its storefront—it was known throughout the village as the Trask Building, home of the Trask Store.
Historic accounts trace the store through Cushman & Trask and Trask & Tupper. John H. Trask's name became so closely associated with the property that the store was known by the Trask name for the rest of its mercantile life.
Over the years the building housed merchants selling groceries, clothing, shoes, hardware and fabrics, as well as Rochester's Post Office, a drugstore, offices and apartments.
A surviving “Trask Block” sign is displayed in the café today, on loan from the Rochester Museum on the second floor of the Rochester Public Library.
Together with neighboring commercial buildings, the Trask Block helped define the village center that generations of Rochester residents knew for shopping, business and everyday community life.
